LAKE HAVASU, Ariz. (AP) - The school day won’t just feel longer when Lake Havasu High School students return from winter break, it will actually run longer.
Today’s News-Herald reports (https://bit.ly/2hIdAZx ) that Lake Havasu Unified School District officials are adding 20 minutes to the school day after an annual audit of the 2015-16 school year found that high school students weren’t meeting state-mandated instruction time averages.
Under state law, high school students must average 123 hours per year per course of classroom time as well as 720 hours of instruction each year. If that measure is not met, schools are at risk of losing state funding.
In the past the audit only considered students taking six class periods for the average but this year auditors also included students on a four period schedule, dropping the average instructional time.
