CAPITOL HEIGHTS, Md. (AP) - Police in Maryland say an officer fatally shot a driver who was pointing a gun at his passenger and another officer.

Prince George’s County Police Chief Hank Stawinski said at a news conference that officers responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle in Capitol Heights on Thursday found two people asleep in a car. When officers woke them up, Stawinski says the passenger tried to flee and the driver pointed a handgun at the passenger and the officer on the passenger side.

That’s when Stawinski says an officer on the driver’s side fired, striking the driver.

Officers performed CPR, but the driver died at a hospital. Police identified him as 19-year-old Terrence Thomas Jr. of Capitol Heights. Police didn’t release the officer’s name or race or Thomas’ race.
