PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) - Chesapeake’s sheriff will take over as interim superintendent of a troubled Virginia jail.

Local news media outlets report that Chesapeake Sheriff Jim O’Sullivan will replace Norfolk Sheriff Bob McCabe as interim superintendent of the Hampton Roads Regional Jail.

McCabe took the job in September after Col. David Simons retired early. Officials are still looking for a permanent superintendent.

The U.S. Justice Department announced this month that it will investigate the jail amid criticism following the deaths of two inmates. Federal officials said they will determine whether inmates are receiving proper medical treatment and psychological services.

In August 2015, 24-year-old Jamycheal Mitchell died at the jail of heart failure accompanied by severe weight loss. Earlier this year, 60-year-old inmate Henry Stewart died two days after asking for emergency medical help.
