MONTEZUMA, Iowa (AP) - A former Iowa sheriff convicted of stealing from his county has been given five years of probation.

Online court records say that at his sentencing earlier this month, Tom Sheets also was fined $7,500 and ordered to pay restitution of nearly $6,200.

He was arrested in connection to a state audit report about operations at the Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office between January 2010 and the end of March 2013.

The report said the county lost about $312,000 during that time. Sheets was accused of improper disbursements, including repeated use of a county gas card for personal use.
