NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) - The North Las Vegas Municipal Court is shrinking to a single judge effective July 1.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2i6Xkij ) the City Council voted 4-1 on Wednesday to eliminate the seat held by Judge Catherine Ramsey. She was prohibited from seeking re-election after admitting to seven charges of unprofessional conduct.

The city will save about $366,000 a year by not paying for a judge and an assistant, although councilmembers said they may hire lawyers to serve as magistrates for traffic and parking cases.

Councilwoman Anita Wood opposed the move, saying it could overload the remaining judge.

The North Las Vegas Municipal Court handled about one-third the number of case filings last year as did the Las Vegas Municipal Court, which has six judges.
