Bend police fatally shoot driver during traffic stop

BEND, Ore. (AP) - A Bend police officer shot and killed a man after a traffic stop in downtown Bend.

The Bend Bulletin reports (https://bit.ly/2iroNL2 ) that the man was pronounced dead at the scene late Friday.

Police said there was an altercation during a traffic stop at about 10:30 p.m. Friday. The man was in his vehicle and at least one officer fired a weapon, killing the man.

Police later identified the man as 31-year-old Michael Tyler Jacques. Officials described him as a “relatively new” arrival from California.

Deschutes County District Attorney John Hummel later told reporters that police stopped Jacques’s car because he was driving erratically. Hummel says Jacques resisted arrest and police used a Taser, but it had no effect.

Hummel says after the Taser, an officer used his gun.

Multiple law enforcement agencies were called to the scene.

A multi-agency investigation into the use of deadly force is being coordinated by Hummel’s office.
