BOSTON (AP) - Zambonis are best known to skaters and hockey players as the lumbering pieces of equipment that creep in circles around skating rinks leaving a smooth sheen of ice in their wake.

On Friday, that plan went awry when a Zamboni driver tending to a temporary ice rink set up outside Boston City Hall crashed through the rink wall and came to rest on the brick plaza.

The driver was taken to the hospital as a precaution but no one on the rink was injured.

The rink was shut down but reopened on Saturday afternoon after the rink wall and some of the ice which had been damaged in the crash were repaired.

The rink will shut down again on Sunday for the Christmas holiday but will re-open Monday.
