GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - A bridge that had been closed in Gulfport has reopened to traffic, allowing motorists to resume their normal commutes.

The Sun Herald reports (https://bit.ly/2hw2V3p ) that traffic early Thursday was once again rolling across the Wilkes Bridge on Cowan-Lorraine Road, which spans the Industrial Seaway.

The bridge had closed around 2 p.m. Wednesday after getting locked in the open position. It remained off-limits to traffic for 12 hours.

T.J. Ladd of the Mississippi Department of Transportation said the bridge was raised to full height to allow a large ship to pass through. Then, as the draw was being lowered, a power outage brought everything to a halt.

The problem caused major traffic delays. The Gulf Regional Planning Commission estimates that more than 30,000 cars a day drive over the Wilkes Bridge.
