Chicago police said six people, including a child, were found dead inside a single-family home on the city’s Southwest side Thursday morning.

The victims showed signs of trauma and police are investigating the possibility that one of the deceased inside the home could have committed the homicides, said interim Police Superintendent John Escalante. He declined to say how the victims were killed.

“At this time we don’t believe there is any threat to the surrounding community,” Superintendent Escalante said in a press conference Thursday afternoon. “There is a very real possibility that this is something all internal that was contained within the residence.”

Police have not identified the victims, but said the child was between 10 and 12 years old.

Officers were called to the home Thursday morning to check on the welfare of one of the occupants, whose coworkers became concerned after he failed to show up for work on both Wednesday and Thursday. Once they arrived at the home, located in the 5700 block of South California Avenue, officers could see a body on the floor inside the home and they forced entry to the residence.

Police officials declined to say Thursday whether any weapons were recovered inside the home.
