X-Games legend Dave Mirra has died at age 41, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, TMZ reported Thursday.

Mr. Mirra, a BMX biker who once held the X-Games record for most medals, was found dead in his truck with a bullet wound to the head, according to TMZ Sports, citing police.

Mr. Mirra was reportedly visiting friends before his death in his hometown of Greenville, North Carolina.

Greenville Mayor Allen Thomas said Mr. Mirra was “a great friend and wonderful human being.”

Several BMX video games were named after Mr. Mirra, who also hosted biking reality shows on MTV. Over his X-Games career from 1995 to 2008, he won a then-record 24 medals, 14 of them gold.

“I just wish he would have called me. I would have jumped on a plane in a second. There’s always another way. If anyone needs help, just please get it. I feel sick about this,” fellow BMX biker and friend T.J. Lavin told TMZ.

He is survived by his wife Lauren and their two children.
