SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah wildlife officials say the number of cottontail rabbits is the highest it’s been in 10 years as the rabbit hunting season is underway throughout the state.

KSL-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1OLuChI ) that Division of Wildlife Resources official Jason Robinson says the population of rabbits is especially high in eastern Utah, but that there are more rabbits this year than last fall in all parts of the state. This hunting season ends Feb. 28.

In addition to the eastern counties, Robinson says sagebrush-covered areas in Box Elder, Tooele, Juab and Millard counties are also good for hunting rabbits.

Robinson recommends hunting for cottontails in the early morning and late afternoon, when the animals typically come out to feed.
