A man with assault weapons and a camouflage outfit in his car when he was arrested overnight and told police he was headed for the Los Angeles Gay Pride parade in West Hollywood.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the man also had pipe-bomb material in his trunk.
“They found him with weapons that were very disconcerting,” a West Hollywood city official told the Times, adding that officials are “taking the appropriate safety precautions.”
According to Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, speaking at the parade opening, the arrest took place “last night” in Santa Monica, thanks to a tip from a neighbor.
The arrest comes hours after Omar Mateen, a man who reportedly pledged allegiance to ISIS, attacked an Orlando gay club, killing 50 people and wounding 53 more in the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil since Sept. 11, 2001.
“We believe [the arrests are] completely unrelated,” Mr. Garcetti said.
