Perhaps Russia is tired of being accused of being the aggressor in recent military incidents of close contact between Russian and Western military forces. It seems the Russian navy attempted to turn the tables in the PR war with a close encounter with the U.S. Navy in the Mediterranean.

Both sides are calling the situation dangerous and pointing the finger at the other, saying the opposition conduct was unprofessional. However, after reviewing the supposed tapes of the incident that are public, it seems Russia was trying for a PR win. The Russian ship can be seen approaching the U.S. vessel and moving back and forth around its stern in an attempt to set up video showing the U.S. vessel was cutting it off.

A U.S. Defense official said the Russian frigate had “repeatedly crossed the stern of USS Gravely at close proximity” and had “repeatedly asked Gravely to maintain a safe distance, yet continued to maneuver in close proximity to Gravely,” reports Reuters.

The video was most likely for a domestic audience that needs to be routinely reminded the United States is the aggressor and not Russia. I am sure the Kremlin got what it wanted with the impression made on the Russian populace with the “evidence.”
