ADDISON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say two men are accused of illegally shooting a sandhill crane in southeastern Michigan.

A woman heard the shot and saw the bird plummet to the ground Monday in Oakland County’s Addison Township. She notified the sheriff’s department, which brought in the state Department of Natural Resources.

DNR Lt. Dan Bigger tells MLive (https://bit.ly/2faADsv ) the suspects are ages 18 and 19. He says they violated numerous regulations in addition to shooting the crane, a protected species that cannot be hunted in Michigan.

Bigger says the men were found with 18 ducks. The daily bag limit is six. They also were using bait, another illegal practice.

On top of that, they were in possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Bigger says investigators are still tallying up citations and misdemeanor charges.
