ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - A western New York man who pleaded guilty to murdering the 17-month-old daughter of his former girlfriend has been sentenced to 20 years to life in prison.

Cory Favata was sentenced on Tuesday in state Supreme Court in Rochester.

Last month, Favata admitted to violently shaking, squeezing, beating and choking the toddler several times in the months leading up to the child’s death in April 2014.

Rileigh Daniels was badly bruised with rib fractures, severe brain bleeding and swelling, and retinal hemorrhaging when emergency crews arrived at an apartment in suburban Rochester. She died three days later at Strong Memorial Hospital.

Police said the girl’s mother and Favata were home with the child when she suffered the fatal injuries.
