A new reported by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has determined that the ZIP code for the University of Maryland in College Park has the highest incidence of chlamydia cases in the state, the Diamondback student newspaper reported Thursday.
“It’s probably most common because of high rates of sexual activity, particularly with multiple partners or more than one, even if they’re spaced out,” said Bradley Boekeloo, director of this University of Maryland Prevention Research Center, the Diamondback reported.
According to the CDC’s website, chlamydia is “among the most prevalent of all STDs, and since 1994, has comprised the largest proportion of all STDs reported to” the federal agency. As such, the CDC “recommends annual chlamydia screening for all sexually active women younger than age 25 years and women ≥25 years at increased risk for infection.”
On its official website, the University of Maryland’s Health Center offers students numerous free and low-cost options for sexually transmitted infection tests, including monthly free screenings for chlamydia, gonorrhea and HIV. The next free screening is from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Nov. 17.
