SUFFOLK, Va. (AP) - Police are investigating after they say skeletal remains were found outside of a grave at a Suffolk cemetery.

Local news organizations report that authorities say they received a call Tuesday afternoon about the unsecured remains discovered at the Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery.

Authorities say the remains are believed to possibly be human and were not associated with a vault there.

Graves in the cemetery date back as far as a century or more in some areas.

Construction crews were renovating the site because of erosion. Those renovations remain on hold while the investigation continues.
