ANALYSIS/OPINION:
The holidays call for drinking, but then what doesn’t these days. Many vintners are unearthing special holiday-related deals that will help lubricate family gatherings as 2016 winds down — and thus help those verboten discussions about politics and religion, if not go smoother, at least hopefully be sooner forgotten.
Hailing from Italy, Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio, at $21.99, offers a bargain for a full taste profile. This delightful white offers a buttery aftertaste with just a hint of acidity on the front of the palate. Recommended food pairings include a pasta in a light red sauce, oysters or calamari.
Stateside vintners are also getting in on the action, and one rather enterprising winery out west is offering a promo wherein consumers can buy three bottles of pinot noir and get one bootle of chardonnay for free. Windrun out of California’s glorious Santa Barbara County wine country (remember “Sideways”?), is offering up this “Holiday Gift Pack” of three bottles of 2012 pinots for the gratis bottle of their 2013 chardonnay. Their pinots include the Sta. Rita Hills, San Luis Obispo County and Santa Barbara County varietals — each of which pairs especially well with Thanksgiving turkey.
Because remember, we all have to get through the holidays somehow.
