TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A raven has been euthanized after it was found in a leg-hold trap on public land east of Tucson.

The bird was found by a passerby on Saturday afternoon and taken to the Tucson Wildlife Center. The center says the bird’s leg was so severely damaged that it had to be euthanized.

The rescuer told the center that the unsecured trap was baited with meat. The center believes it was designed to catch bobcats or coyotes.

It’s illegal to set such traps on public lands and illegal to trap if you haven’t paid a trapping fee to the Arizona Department of Game and Fish.

The wildlife center says it’s also illegal to trap birds covered by the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which includes ravens.
