ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) - Louisiana authorities say a 55-year-old Alexandria woman died after the 12-foot boat she was riding in capsized, trapping her underneath.

The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says in a news release that both Holly Schnepp and the male operator were wearing life vests, but Schnepp could not reach the surface.

Department enforcement spokesman Adam Einck (EYNK) says the boat operator told investigators the steering handle slipped out of his hand and the boat turned quickly, throwing both occupants out.

He says the accident occurred about 7 a.m. Sunday on the Red River in Alexandria.

Einck says a tugboat crew spotted them about 30 minutes later and got both to the bank, where an ambulance crew found that Schnepp was dead.

An autopsy will determine cause of death.
