PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Maine Democrats have already requested more than twice as many absentee ballots than Republicans.

The Portland Press Herald reported (https://bit.ly/2dkEVgy ) that Republicans account for about one-fifth of the roughly 23,000 absentee ballot requests.

Maine Democrats have typically been more likely to vote by absentee ballot, which campaigns promote to ensure votes are locked in before Election Day.

But Maine Republican Party Executive Director Jason Savage said that the GOP will soon start a push to get Republicans to vote early.

The Associated Press has projected that roughly 40 percent of all votes nationwide this year could be cast before Election Day.
