WATERTOWN, N.Y. (AP) - An 8-pound, 4-ounce smallmouth bass caught in the St. Lawrence River this summer ties a 21-year-old state record.

State environmental officials say Patrick Hildenbrand of Germantown in Columbia County caught the big bass on Aug. 28 during a fishing tournament in Jefferson County.

Hildenbrand tied a state record for smallmouth bass set in 1995 on Lake Erie.

The St. Lawrence River and the wider Thousand Islands region are known for their smallmouth bass fishery.

New York’s Great Lakes and its tributaries have provided 12 of the 45 existing state records.
