WASHINGTON (AP) - Police say an officer shot an armed man during a pursuit in southeast Washington.

The Metropolitan Police Department said Saturday in a statement that the man who was shot by the officer sustained injuries that are not thought to be life threatening. The man is in critical condition.

Police say two plain clothes officers were responding to sounds of gunshots Friday evening when they saw a man flee on foot. Police say the officer shot the man after the suspect brandished a loaded firearm during the pursuit.

Police say the man will be charged with assault on a police officer. The officer who shot the man has been placed on administrative leave.

Neither the suspect nor the officer was identified.
