METAIRIE, La. (AP) - New Orleans economic development official Abhay Patel is dropping out of Louisiana’s U.S. Senate race and giving his support to U.S. Rep. Charles Boustany.

The two Republicans appeared together Thursday in the New Orleans area to make the announcement. Patel described Boustany as a “man of integrity who has devoted his life to getting results.”

Patel was one of 24 candidates vying for the open seat on the Nov. 8 ballot. But he was never able to catch fire in a field that includes two sitting congressmen and other elected officials with higher name recognition and deeper pockets.

In backing Boustany, Patel bypassed other GOP Senate contenders including state Treasurer John Kennedy and U.S. Rep. John Fleming.

The Senate seat is open because Republican David Vitter isn’t running for re-election.
