TICKFAW, La. (AP) - State police say a 21-year-old driver fleeing Hammond police died in a three-vehicle wreck in Tickfaw.

Trooper First Class Dustin Dwight says Darious Ashton, of Tickfaw, died after his car collided shortly before noon Wednesday with another vehicle and a dump truck.

Dwight said in a news release Hammond police had tried to stop Ashton for a traffic violation, but he fled north on Highway 1065. With officers in pursuit, Ashton turned onto Sims Lane and ran a stop sign before his vehicle was struck by a car. He says Ashton’s vehicle was then hit again by a dump truck.

Dwight says Ashton, who was not wearing a seat belt, sustained severe injuries. He was taken to a Hammond hospital and was pronounced dead by an emergency room doctor.
