MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The Memphis diocese’s new Catholic bishop preached the importance of love and mercy as he began his ministry.

The Commercial Appeal (https://memne.ws/2e6YCsW ) reports that the Most Rev. Martin D. Holley was installed as the fifth bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Memphis during a special Mass celebrated Wednesday at the Cook Convention Center.

Hundreds of people attended the ceremony, including dozens of priest and bishops, three cardinals, and the papal nuncio, the Vatican’s U.S. ambassador.

During his first homily, Holley urged people to show love and bring mercy to those who need it.

Following the Mass, Holley helped others pack 2,000 food bags for the homeless, and divide floral arrangements for the Mass into smaller bouquets for residents of the Ave Maria Nursing Home.
