TEXAS CITY, Texas (AP) - Texas City has completed more than $400,000 in improvements to some parks and a 5-mile dike that’s a popular fishing spot.

The Galveston County Daily News (https://bit.ly/2ezLqvK ) reports the upgrades were finished last week at Bay Street Park, Haney Park and the Texas City Dike. The project includes a new bridge on a bike trail.

The funds, approved earlier this year by Texas City leaders, include about $200,000 for oyster reef restoration. The Texas Parks & Wildlife Department is leading the restoration effort, adding about $200,000 in state money.

Texas City Mayor Matt Doyle has said the bulk of oystering in Galveston Bay takes place within the Texas City limits. The reefs were damaged when Hurricane Ike hit in September 2008, then recovery was delayed amid several years of drought.
