NEW YORK (AP) - New York City police say a 23-year-old man is in critical condition after he lunged at officers with a knife and was shot three times.

Chief Terence Monahan says the incident occurred around 11 a.m. Wednesday as police responded to 911 calls about a man with a gun and a knife in front of a Brooklyn laundromat.

Monahan says the man, identified as Davonte Pressley, lunged toward officers after he was repeatedly ordered to drop the knife.

He was shot in the torso and was taken to Brookdale Hospital.

Police say they recovered a knife at the scene.
