JENA, La. (AP) - An early-morning fire killed a 6-year-old girl in a camper trailer while her mother was away, Louisiana authorities said.

Wendy Leian Blasingame, 29, of Jena was booked with negligent homicide in the death Wednesday of Ayla Breeland, Chief Deputy Fire Marshal Brant Thompson said Thursday.

The fire was reported about 4 a.m. Wednesday. It broke out near a mattress on the floor where Breeland slept, he said.

“It was unclear how long she was left alone. … She was left there for hours,” Thompson said.

He said a space heater was hooked up to unsafe wiring near the mattress.

“It was done in a manner inconsistent with all codes and laws as it pertains to electrical wiring,” Thompson said.

The trailer was among several structures which had bootlegged electrical service, he said.

Breeland’s father had custody but let her stay with her mother sometimes, Thompson said.

Thompson said Breeland had been left alone for hours, and when Blasingame discovered the fire, she allegedly ran and hid in an abandoned shed about two miles away. She appeared to be drugged when she did show up, and other people told investigators Thursday they had been injecting methamphetamine with her, Thompson added.

Thompson didn’t know whether Blasingame has an attorney.
