NEW YORK (AP) - New York police say a loaded weapon was found at the scene where officers shot an armed man in the left leg while they were patrolling a housing development.

Assistant Chief David Barrere says a plainclothes lieutenant and a police officer were exiting a second-floor stairwell of the Baisley Housing Development in Jamaica around 9:20 p.m. Friday.

Barrere says both officers fired their weapons in a subsequent encounter with the man. He was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition. The officers were not injured.

Barrere says a loaded 9 mm gun was recovered at the scene.

The man was identified as 38-year-old Jamel Ethridge. He was arrested on charges including attempted murder and menacing. It’s not clear if he has an attorney who can speak for him.
