DENVER (AP) - An Evergreen couple accused of starving their 6-year-old daughter, who was brought to a hospital weighing only 25 pounds, have pleaded guilty to child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury.

The Denver Post reports (https://goo.gl/j8qaGc ) 40-year-old Jason Barton and 36-year-old Katherine Barton entered their pleas Monday and face up to 24 years in prison.

The couple said their daughter, who suffered long-term malnutrition, was stealing food and that’s why the family’s refrigerator, freezer and pantries were locked. They said the child had a form of autism and often consumed too much food, so they limited the amount she could eat.

Hospital staff determined the child is not autistic, and they could not find any “psychological or medical” reasons why she was so severely underweight.
