ELIZABETH, N.J. (AP) - A man convicted of accosting a woman on a street and trying to sexually assault her has been sentenced to 37 years in prison.

Wukeem Lewis must serve more than 32 years under the sentence announced Monday.

A Union County jury convicted the 57-year-old Elizabeth man earlier this year on charges of kidnapping, attempted aggravated sexual assault and attempted sexual assault.

Prosecutors say the woman was walking home from work in September 2013 when she was attacked on Westminster Avenue in Elizabeth. They say Lewis dragged her a short distance to an area near an abandoned home, then restrained her there and attempted to sexually assault.

But he soon ran off when a concerned citizen intervened.

Lewis was later identified as a suspect and was arrested in December 2013.
