NEWTON, Iowa (AP) - Officials say a developer is donating seven buildings in Newton to Des Moines Area Community College.

The Newton Daily News reports (https://bit.ly/2f1OqUQ ) developer Reza Kargarzadeh announced Monday he would donate the buildings that once were part of the Maytag corporate headquarters to the college. The donation of the 472,000 feet of office, industrial and residential space is valued at about $8 million.

The space has been largely vacant since Maytag was sold to the Whirlpool corporation, which then closed the headquarters about nine years ago.

Officials say Kargarzadeh, a Grinnell businessman, has done a good job of maintaining the building since he took ownership in 2012.

Frank Liebl, executive director of the Newton Development Corporation, says the buildings will enable the college to partner with local schools and businesses.
