SURRY, Maine (AP) - Authorities in Maine are investigating numerous reports of lobster traps being cut, resulting in a costly loss of gear for fishermen.

Maine Department of Marine Resources Commissioner Patrick Keliher says the reports are coming from the area of Newbury Neck.

He says it has been going on since early summer and the possibility of the incidents escalating has motivated him to beef up investigations in the area.

Operation Game Thief is offering a $15,000 reward for information to help the Maine Marine Patrol in its investigation. Keliher says the incidents are territorial disputes among a few lobstermen, but he is viewing it as a serious problem for the fishery.

Marine Patrol Colonel Jon Cornish says the incidents represent the most expensive loss of gear he’s seen in three decades.
