COVINGTON, La. (AP) - The St. Tammany Parish district attorney says a 20-year-old man has been sentenced to 70 years in prison after a mid-trial guilty plea to manslaughter for killing his father and 2-year-old half-sister as they slept.

Warren Montgomery says Jacob Eli Middleton Jr. was charged with capital murder but reached a plea agreement Friday, after nearly two days of testimony.

He won’t be eligible for parole or other relief until after the first of two 35-year sentences.

Middleton was 17 when he shot Jacob Middleton Sr. and Makayla Middleton in the head sometime between Jan. 3-5, 2015.

Makayla’s mother, Kellie Bravo, found the bodies Jan. 5, after Middleton Sr. failed to drop their daughter off or go to work after what he’d planned as a weekend with his children.
