AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine’s deer would be wise to look for a good costume as Halloween marks the beginning of their least favorite time of the year.

The season for hunting deer with firearms begins Monday in the Pine Tree State.

This year the state increased the number of “any deer” hunting permits by 60 percent. Maine gave out more than 45,000 of the permits via a lottery.

State officials said the deer herd could withstand more hunting pressure this year because so many deer survived a mild winter.

If there’s any good news for deer, it’s that most of the archery season ended on Oct. 28. But the state also has an “expanded archery” season until December in some areas.
