BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) - A judge sentenced a Burlington area man to 50 years in prison for the beating death of his 3-week-old son.

The Hawk Eye newspaper reports (https://bit.ly/2cQgzsO ) District Judge Mark Kruse on Monday sentenced Randall Payne to a mandatory 50 years in prison before he will become eligible for parole. Payne also must pay $150,000 in restitution to his son’s estate.

Jurors in May found the 24-year-old Payne guilty of involuntary manslaughter and two child endangerment charges in the death of his son, Carter Payne. Evidence shows the infant died of blunt force trauma.

Payne didn’t speak at his sentencing but told a pre-sentence investigator he “needed to serve some time, but 50 years is ridiculous.”

Kruse told Payne his actions “are the ultimate violation of your duties as a parent.”
