LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - Police say a Las Cruces woman whose 9-year-old son tested positive for cocaine has been accused of negligent child abuse.

They say 31-year-old Mary Lou Barela has been booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center and more charges against her are pending.

A police officer located Barela at Young Park on Aug. 7 with her three children - ages 6, 9 and 11.

The officer determined Barela was in possession of a backpack that contained drug paraphernalia.

Detectives say Barela allegedly had smoked crack cocaine two days earlier.

Barela’s three children were transferred to the custody of the New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department.

Barela submitted to a drug test along with her children.

Police say Barela and her 9-year-old son both tested positive for cocaine.
