MISSION, Texas (AP) - Border Patrol officials say a search of two apartment units in South Texas resulted in the discovery of 56 people who admitted to being in the U.S. illegally, including five people from Mexico who admitted to being smugglers.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Wednesday that they received information about the apartment units - both in the same complex in Mission - on Monday afternoon and obtained consent to search them. They then arrested the 56 people on Monday.

Officials said those found in the apartments were from Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. They were taken to a Border Patrol station where they were processed.

Officials say the five smugglers, two men and three women, were referred for prosecution.
