In a new interview with People magazine, actress and country singer Jana Kramer discusses a painful part of her past: how ex-husband Michael Gambino attempted to kill her on Aug. 6, 2005.

“I remember praying that night, ‘Please, just take me away, I don’t want to be here anymore,’” she told People.

Gambino, who served time prison time for the assault, committed suicide in 2012. Ms. Kramer was later briefly married to actor Johnathon Schaech and is separated from husband Mike Caussin, a former NFL player, with whom she has a daughter, Jolie.

Us Weekly reported in September that the split with Mr. Caussin was due to repeated infidelity on his part.

“I’m so embarrassed and afraid no one will love me because of my past, but I’m ready to put it out there now,” Ms. Kramer told People.

The full interview is published in the Oct. 17 edition of People magazine.
