BURBANK, Calif. (AP) - A man suspected of making criminal threats died after police in California stunned him with a Taser outside a home where another man who was armed with a gun barricaded himself during a standoff, officials said Wednesday.

Police responded to the Burbank neighborhood Tuesday evening following reports that someone had been making threats, police Sgt. Claudio Losacco said.

A man in his 60s confronted the officers outside the house and one officer discharged his Taser to subdue him, causing the man to collapse, he said.

A second man then came to the door armed with a handgun and threatened police, Losacco said.

The officers took cover and called for backup.

Officers using shields were able to drag the man hit by the Taser away from the front of the house. He was attended to by paramedics but died at the scene.

The second man surrendered after a 40-minute standoff and was arrested, Losacco said.

“He was walking out and he put his hands over his head, got on the ground and they took him away,” Harrington told KABC-TV.

His name was not immediately released.

Police did not identify the relationship between the two men, but neighbors said they were brothers who lived in the house with their elderly mother.

Nancy Harrington said they fought often. “They’ve kind of had a feud for a long time,” she said.

The cause of death will be determined by the coroner’s office, which did not immediately identify the man.

The death was being investigated by Burbank police and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office.

No details were immediately released on the alleged criminal threats that drew police to the home about 10 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.
