NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Death row inmate David Lee McNish, who was convicted of murdering a 70-year old woman in 1983, has died.

The state Department of Correction says McNish was found unresponsive in his cell at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville on Wednesday morning. Officials say the 63-year-old appears to have died of natural causes.

McNish was sentenced to death for the bludgeoning death of Gladys Smith with a vase in 1983 in Elizabethton. McNish had borrowed money from Smith to buy drugs.

Smith died within a short time after the beating, although she was still alive when first found by a neighbor after he heard sounds from her apartment. McNish was seen leaving the apartment.

During his arrest, police found pants in the car stained with Smith’s blood.
