TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Saguaro National Park outside Tucson is looking for volunteers to help remove an invasive grass from the desert area.

Park officials say volunteers at Saturday’s event will help clear buffelgrass within the Rincon Mountain District.

Buffelgrass is not only invasive but highly flammable, and park officials say it can help small fires spread out of control and engulf native plants. It also forces out native plants, wildlife habitat and food.

The group that will work Saturday is one of several buffelgrass weed whacking groups that gather every second Saturday from September through May.

Volunteers will meet at the Rincon Mountain Visitor Center at 7 a.m., walk to the site and work for several hours. Proper hiking attire including long pants and boots is required along with plenty of water.
