WILLISTON, Vt. (AP) - Environmental advocates gathered in Williston to discuss raising the remaining funds needed to clean up Lake Iroquois (EER’-uh-koy), which has been under attack by an invasive species.

Lake Iroquois Association officials tell WPTZ-TV (https://bit.ly/2cBhv7T ) that the group has been working to eliminate Eurasian Watermilfoil from the northwest Vermont reservoir.

Eurasian Watermilfoil is a fern-like species that can grow up to 14 feet underwater. If the pest is not removed in a timely fashion, it can clog waterways and cause dangerous situations by sticking to swimmers and boats.

Association director Jamie Carroll says several state-approved herbicides can be used to mitigate the effects of the species.

Carroll says using the herbicides to treat the lake would cost between $80,000 and $100,000, with annual touch-ups running around $50,000.
