ANALYSIS/OPINION:

The Philadelphia Liberty Medal is a highly reputable prize. Rep. John Lewis of Georgia is an excellent choice for this year’s recipient (“John Lewis awarded Liberty Medal for civil rights work,” web, Sept. 19). The prize has an established history and Mr. Lewis is an effective congressman.

This year has been remarkable for him. With mass shootings leading the news, through leadership Mr. Lewis showed us that sometimes having a sit-in may be the only thing that our elected officials can do to remedy a tremendous problem. There have been too many editorial cartoons of his leadership regarding the Orlando nightclub shootings.

I am a highly decentralized individual. I believe in government authority. Moreover, I respect Mr. Lewis as a politician and I believe in his politics.
