PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A new outdoor performance venue has opened in Providence’s South Side.
The SouthLight pavilion had its inaugural event Friday evening.
A team of students and faculty at the Rhode Island School of Design designed the translucent, white-walled pavilion, which glows at night. Its flexible structure allows its walls to open up for events.
It’s located on Broad Street outside the Southside Cultural Center of Rhode Island.
The cultural center plans to use the pavilion and adjacent lawn for its own community events and may rent it out to the public. Among the performance and arts groups partnered with the Southside Cultural Center are the Laotian Community Center, Cambodian Society of Rhode Island, Providence Improv Guild, Rhode Island Black Storytellers, Rhode Island Latino Arts and the Wilbury Theatre Group.
