BILOXI, Miss. (AP) - A 25-year-old Biloxi man has been sentenced to at least 9 ½ years in prison for burning a 16-month-old boy in hot water in 2014.

The Sun Herald (https://bit.ly/2dsiI3R ) reports Kenneth Ashton Preston was sentenced Wednesday on the felony child abuse charge.

As trial was about to begin Tuesday, Preston entered an “Alford plea” - not admitting guilt but accepting that prosecutors have enough evidence for conviction.

Judge Roger Clark suspended 10 ½ years of a 20-year sentence, fined Preston $3,000 and ordered him to pay $1,000 to the Mississippi Children’s Trust Fund. Once out of prison, Preston will have five years on supervised release.

Preston says the burns were accidental but he takes full responsibility.

Clark said he’d planned a shorter sentence, but couldn’t tell whether Preston had any true remorse.
