BARTON, Vt. (AP) - Authorities in Vermont say they’re investigating the disturbance of an infant’s grave as vandalism after the coffin was dug up and opened.

The Orleans County Sheriff’s Department says the marked grave at St. Paul’s Cemetery was disturbed sometime between Sept. 1 and Sept. 9.

Chief Deputy Phil Brooks tells The Caledonian Record (https://bit.ly/2dEYoIq ) family members alerted a church official after discovering the earth over the coffin had been dug into and then covered up.

Authorities say the coffin interred at the cemetery in the 1980s was opened through a hole. But it’s unclear how it was breached.

Brooks says authorities don’t know if the remains inside the coffin were disturbed. The department may ask the state medical examiner to determine if the body has been tampered with.
