Police shot a man who was firing a weapon Wednesday afternoon on Georgia Avenue in the District’s Petworth neighborhood.
An area bicycle officer was alerted to the shots being fired around 2 p.m. When the officer arrived the man was firing off rounds near the Petworth Metro station. So the officer fired on the suspect, who was taken to an area hospital where he is currently being treated.
No one else was injured in the incident. The suspect’s weapon was recovered at the scene.
Assistant Police Chief Peter Newsham said Wednesday that the cop involved was a “fantastic officer” who routinely worked the Petworth beat on his mountain bike. He also said due to the time of the incident there were numerous witnesses to be interviewed before releasing any information.
Georgia Avenue will be closed to traffic during evening rush hour between New Hampshire Ave and Taylor Street NW for police activity following the officer involved shooting.
