RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) - A 34-year-old Long Island man has pleaded guilty to strangling his wife and bashing her in the head with an object before burying her body in a shallow grave seven years ago.

Newsday reports (https://nwsdy.li/2pn8cLG ) jury selection was underway Monday in a Suffolk County courtroom when Joseph Jones interrupted the proceedings to plead guilty to manslaughter in the death of 31-year-old Nicole Tessa.

Jones was working as a property manager in Centereach in December 2010 when he and his wife got into a violent argument on the street in North Patchogue where they lived. Jones admitted to strangling her and hitting on the head with something. He then buried her body in the nearby woods.

Prosecutors say Jones and Tessa were both addicted to pain pills and were dealing in the prescription drugs to support their habits.
